Let’s talk about building strong networks. Many people hit me, saying they would love to meet certain people and build their networks and relationships. Reading my previous letter, you’ll see how much I emphasized the need to create strong circles.
Today, let’s talk about getting into solid circles.
I once came across the concept of ‘Super Connector’ a while ago and got intrigued by it. I read and read a lot about it, and even went a very long distance to have a meeting with a mentor so he could explain the concept in practical terms to me. Yea, that’s how much I pursue knowledge.
So, let’s see what this concept is all about.
A Super Connector or Relationship Broker is someone who nurtures business relationships and continuously leverages social capital by identifying mutual business practical situations to broker high-powered one-on-one business introductions.
One of the quickest ways to become one, aside from kissing ass, is by providing real value catered to their needs. It’s called the swing effect.
Building relationships are in 3 tiers:
1. Above your circle
2. Below your circle.
3. Within your circle.
The people in the number one category are people you admire and aspire to be in their circles. Many of them are already successful in their fields and have built a name for themselves. But, in most cases, it always proves difficult to get these people to notice and accept you. My advice here is to focus on your grind. Keep putting in the work and building your own brand and name. When you build yours, they’ll find you. At this point, they would respect and appreciate you better.
We also forget the salient idea of connecting with peers. People within your circle are easier to reach; this is because, you are most likely on similar status or level. Never forget that the people in this circle are the proverbial leaders of tomorrow. In a few years, these guys would be heads of empires. Your relationship with them today would count for something then.
And finally, the people below your circle. The trick here is to build an army of people who believe in you, your cause, can stand for you and push your gospel far. This is a tried and tested way to build strong circles. These people would go on to become your first land soldiers. Deploy them with discretion.
…………
There’s a simple formula for those who want to harness the power of connecting: instead of asking for things, provide value.
Building relationships take real time. Don’t try to fake it. You can’t instantly have kinsmanship with somebody until you’ve shown the kind of person you are.
A rule of thumb: Never expect anything back, but be ready to give.
Strategically building relationships with people within your circles usually introduce you to more extensive processes.
Be known as that person who listens, cares, and is always willing to help & engage. Strategic & purposeful but not snobbish.
It isn’t about you. “Always ask, ‘How can I help you?
Changing your mindset around this question is crucial. You can never go into it with self-interest as a primary goal, or people will see right through you. Once this is sorted, being yourself around people won’t be hard.
